Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria can be traced to 1857  when the Spanish Board of Trade sponsored the creation of Banco de Bilbao as a currency-issuing and discount bank. Banco de Bilbao later merged with Banco de Vizcaya (which was founded in 1901) to form BBV in 1988.
